As if being dead in the eyes of judicial officialdom were not bad enough, Miller may be deceased as far as the US federal bureaucracy is concerned, which could mean that even at times when the US government is open for business it will not grant Miller a social security number, nine digits without which he cannot work legally.
Before we brim over with sympathy for the 61 year-old Miller let us note that his ex-wife Robin had him declared dead after he disappeared -- decades ago-- leaving behind thousands of dollars of unpaid child support obligations. The motivation for the vanishing act does not appear to have been an honourable one.
Also consider that had Miller been successful before Judge Davis the US social security administration might have gone after Robin to recover monies that were paid to her for her daughters' benefit, under a provision of US social security legislation that has survived periodic attempts to fricassee the US social safety net. Robin is a nurse on disability who cannot afford such a clawback and who has re-married: to another man with the surname Miller.
When one considers the pardons, indulgences (and $90,000 cheques) that are handed out to various well-connected folks with troubled pasts or presents (whether by way of official fiat or sub silencio by a potentate's fixer), one is pained by the (unjust) fact that folks like Robin and Donald cannot have their predicament solved by a stroke of the pen.
